He was the 4th of the so-called ‘5 Superiors’ of the Sakya order and the 6th holder of the Sakya throne. The Sakya tradition regards him as an incarnation of Mañjuśrī the deity who represents Wisdom. In other images and paintings of him this association with Mañjuśrī may sometimes be reinforced by lotus tendrils arcing from his hands to his shoulders where are a sword and the book of Prajñāpāramitā, the Perfection of Wisdom. His hands are held in a variation of the esoteric teaching gesture.
